Speaking during a Town Hall meeting held recently in Kafanchan, the Deputy Governor of Kaduna state Honourable Architect Yusuf Barnabas Bala, who stood in for the Governor, expressed profound appreciation for NBA’s noteworthy contributions to the on -going resolution of the lingering crises in the territory.
“As far as I know, NBA is the only organization that has done a publication to shed light on the Southern Kaduna crises,” he said. “I was with the Governor when the NBA’s fact-finding team led by its President, A.B. Mahmoud, SAN came calling. I am also aware that they went round the affected areas in order to do an assessment of damages done. And, I have no doubt in my mind that they would be doing an objective report that would greatly enhance the prospect of peace in Southern Kaduna.
In another devepment, President of the Nigerian Bar Association, Abubakar Balarabe Mahmoud, SAN, presented realistic agenda for restoration of peace to the plagued villages and districts of Southern Kaduna. He spoke through his First Vice President, Mr. Caleb Dajan, who had been accompanied by a delegation of 34 NBA members to the Town Hall meeting, called on stakeholders to treat culprits in the endemic crises as criminals.
“A crime is a crime,” he said. “Let’s look at it as a crime and not give it religious coloration. Let’s start punishing crime. Unless we punish criminals, we may not rid Southern Kaduna of incessant attacks by these miscreants. Whether they hide under the cloak of religion or ethnicity, criminals are criminals. Let’s treat them as such.”
He then called on all stakeholders in Southern Kaduna to close up ranks and present a common front in fighting their aggressors.
The third NBA’s strategy for restoration of peace is the intensification of Military-Civilian Affairs initiative. He expressed great delight in seeing the Directorate of Military-Civilian Affairs, which he regarded as useful tool for building a lasting cordial relationship between soldiers and civilians
“So, this Military-Civilian Affairs initiative gladdens me.” He said. “This is a paradigm shift. Military will now be engaged in conflict resolution and not exacerbation as it happened in the past.
“It is a mechanism for lubricating people’s contact with soldiers thereby moving peace initiatives forward towards restoration of total peace in Southern Kaduna.
Dajan appraised NBA’s cordial relationship with the military which has been characterized with courtesy visits and interactions at different fora.
” Only last week NBA President, Abubakar Balarabe Mahmoud, SAN, paid a courtesy call on the Chief of Army Staff, Lieutenant Tukur Buratai at Abuja, among other things, to find areas of cooperation between the Army and NBA.
“In January this year, NBA President A B. Mahmoud SAN,led a fact-finding team to pay condolence visit to Governor Nasir El-Rufai to assess the extent of damage perpetrated during the crises. We visited about three places. You know, NBA is the conscience of the society, the voice of the masses.
“Earlier on, the Deputy Governor, who was Special Guest of Honour, formally opened the Town Hall meeting, tagged “Operation Harbin Kunama,” which translates into “Operation Scorpion Stings,” and themed :”The Impact and Implication of terrorism and ethno- religious crises on national security architecture
